Lyrics
My brother Woodrow wrote of our great-great-grandfather who served in the South.

On April our great-great-grandfather,

Joseph Marion Nichols joined Company B Tiger Rifles in New Orleans.

This was the ZUOV unit in the 1st Louisiana Special Battalion.

commanded by Chasen Ruberdo Wheat.

After extensive training at Camp Moore,

Tangipahoa, Louisiana, Wheat's battalion departed for Virginia by railroad on June

Joseph participated in the First Battle of Manassas.

Joseph was in many of the early battles until Wheat was killed at Gaines Mill June

With many casualties and the loss of their commander, the 1st Louisiana Special Battalion was disbanded August

Joseph was then transferred to Company C Rapides Terribles, 27th Louisiana Infantry.

At that time, Joseph's oldest son, Isaac Nichols, was also serving in Company C.

Joseph and his oldest son, Isaac, were captured during the Siege of Vicksburg on July

They both were later exchanged or paroled and served the Confederacy through the end of the war.

They both made it home alive.
