on a lily pad i saw a baby lying sleeping

she was wrapped in seaweed

when i picked her up

she started singing to me sweetly

just like a perfect little bird

later on the sun went down

i came upon my lover washing in the water

darling do you think

that she could be somebody's daughter

i know that you want one of your own

now that she has grown

she likes to wander to the river

swim into the starlight

soon she won't return to me

her supper when i call

she'll be running with the river on her own
